Activism of informed citizens is needed to ensure energy-safety of 21st century!

As history has shown through the example of Easter Islands, societies can over-consume resources till the last minute without much thought about the future.
The recent history of the credit crisis has demonstrated that modern industrial society has tendency to pursue ongoing processes all the way, even while non-sustainability is clear to informed people. This foreshadows heavy dependence on traditional energy resources till the last minute, without any significant development of long-term energy solutions.

It follows from the logic of energy business that the 'scientists and experts will solve it' scenario will never materialize:

1. Traditional energy resources are cheaper than alternatives all the way till their global peak, meaning that market forces do not promote development of long-term energy solutions. Development of alternatives is purely dependent on research funding and governmental incentives.

2. Governments are not accountable for the final outcome of promoted energy solutions. The scene is set to channel to channel public funding into - often illusionary - quick fixes, which benefit major existing businesses. Communication is craftily managed to raise citizen support for chosen resource allocations - invoking out-of context environmental or sustainability argumentation.

3. As costs of developing a new approaches to fission or fusion technology are astronomical, well-meaning scientists and experts can do very little to alter the course mapped out by above two trends.

It is the strength of industrial societies that they are capable of pooling vast amounts of resources towards certain stated goals. We are currently in the midst of an epic controlled pooling of resources. The following chart gives the illustration from USA, as of late 2008, about the amount of resources being pooled and distributed - to the total tune of 7.2 Trillion USD:

Resource pooling of similar intensity is expected in other OECD countries. Isn't it time to demand that at least some percentage of the trillions should be spent on finding real answers to energy issues?

Perhaps a most important and noble task one can do on individual level is to learn about long-term energy solutions, to distinguish facts from opinions and propaganda, and to be active on individual level in support of promising energy solutions. With a critical number of foresighted individuals, downturn may be avoided.

3. Organize on-line petitions in support of research and development of realistic long-term energy solutions
